The Road not Taken? ~A03~

Posted in Uncategorized on March 30, 2011 by najwaelia

Salam and hi again especially to all my lovely course mate and my beloved lecturers.

Less than 3 weeks left for this semester to end. This time I pray that the time will go slowly. I want to grad, but I don’t want to leave all the memories. Feel  sad but life must go one.

Still remember a poem by Robert Frost? The Road Not Taken. Well, since I am quite emotional tonight let us read this together first. Well enjoyed it and cherished the moments we had for almost 6 years!

The Road Not Taken (Robert Frost)

TWO roads diverged in a yellow wood,

And sorry I could not travel both

And be one traveler, long I stood

And looked down one as far as I could

To where it bent in the undergrowth;
        5

Then took the other, as just as fair,

And having perhaps the better claim,

Because it was grassy and wanted wear;

Though as for that the passing there

Had worn them really about the same,
        10

And both that morning equally lay

In leaves no step had trodden black.

Oh, I kept the first for another day!

Yet knowing how way leads on to way,

I doubted if I should ever come back.
        15

I shall be telling this with a sigh

Somewhere ages and ages hence:

Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—

I took the one less traveled by,

And that has made all the difference.
        20

rnt

Have you all decided on the road you want to take? The one you choose is the one that will absolutely make the difference.

Urban/ Rural? hehe… teachers, choose! Can we choose? No! T_T

Okay! Get back to business then. Hmm.. when it comes to assignment, I hope that time will move fast so that we can finish it all! Yeayyy..haha…okay then let’s move to the progress, journey of our Assignment 3 in the ICT course.

First of all, please wake me up! I’m in my dream land for this whole 11 weeks..haha.. dream…dream..dream….

Hmm… 7 possible items?

7 items to ensure an effective student-centred, personalised, higher-order-thinking lesson. What should those items be?

Blank.Blank.Blank.

Clueless.. Hmmm….

Ohh yes! Idea..Idea…

Have you heard about INERTIA? I’m sure you still remember right? It is a concept in science.

Inertia according to Wikipedia is

the resistance of any physical object to a change in its state of motion or rest

for example, look at the picture below…

inertia bus

Got it? When the train apply brake, people and things inside the train will still moving forward. I want this to happen in a lesson too. Even the teacher stop/ finishes the lesson, students will still move forward and learn on it’s own. It is what we called autonomous learner who learn and construct knowledge on their own without depending much on the teacher. So, in order to complete assignment 3, “INERTIA” must be in!

So, from the words INERTIA itself, I come out with the 7 possible items that should be applied in the Assignment 3.

I = Inclusive various media and technology

N = New knowledge & i+1

E = Effective Collaborative Learning

R = Realistic and meaningful activities

T = Thorough inside out

I = Independent Leaner

A = Active Learning and Assessment

Well, let’s move to the explanation on what have we included and will include for Assignment 3 for each of the item above.

# I = Inclusive various media and technology

tech1

Since, we are in ICT course, media and technology is a vital part of it. We have learnt and get to know a lot of ICT tools like Kerpoof, Tuxpaint, StoryBird, Glogster and a lot more. Thanks to Ms Ng. and Ms. Marsyitah for guiding us and introduce us these tools which really help us to prepare for the assignment.

Also, this item is also very important as it will surely get the students involve and make the class to be more student centred as students will be able to experience using the literacytools on their own especially for the school occupied with projector and computer lab. Also, using ICT tools will get students personalized as it will cater most but not all the students differences in learning styles. Moreover, ICT tools or this media technology will help students to think more and indulge themselves into the lesson.

# N = New knowledge & i+1

k2

What I meant by new knowledge is how we plan the lesson to include new knowledge or knowledge with one level higher than the students level. It is actually what is applied in Stephen Krashen’s theory where students learn best when with give extended input but accompanying it with guidance from teachers or other good students in the class.

input model

New knowledge is also important to increase students’ knowledge of the topic discussed and also to avoid boredom. Ways of doing this is also through using as much ICT tools as we could to create interest within the students.

In assignment 3, we have tried to came out with new things or at least new vocabulary for the students to learn to help them improve and learn one step forward. k1

# E = Effective Collaborative Learning

group group3

Collaborative learning or group work is important in planning a lesson. If possible teacher should make students to sit in groups as much as possible from the start to the end of the lesson.

This is because collaborative learning will help in reducing inferiority. When students work individually, if teacher calls out a few students, the others will be in the state of inferiority where they will feel left out. However, it is not the same when they work in group as they are working cooperatively in group and present things as a group. it will develop sense of togetherness between the group member and also increase healthy competition between the groups.

Therefore, in Assignment 3, each of the lesson is made as cooperative as possible by making students learn in group collaboratively.

# R = Realistic and meaningful activities

meanigful

Here, realistic and meaningful activities are also important when we are planning for assignment 3 as the activities done should be realistic where it can be carried out successfully within the school condition. For example, school 1 with no projector and no computer lab at all. So, the activities done is planned so that it can still be interesting but at the same time can be a success when we use the lesson in the classroom.

Furthermore, the activities done should also be meaningful and related to the students daily life test1as much as possible as to make them be independent and learn on their own later on. The lesson is planned so that students did not learn for the sake of test or examination only. They learn for a specific purpose and that is why it should be as interesting as possible.

# T = Thorough inside out -  cross curricular activity

For this item, our lessons is planned not just based on solely English lesson. It actually goes through different subjects matter. For example, the topic that I am working on is on food pyramid. The topic can be combined together with science lesson to make it more interesting.

cross curricluar

So, we search and browse for things between science and English subject in order to produce an interesting and appealing lesson for the students.

# I =  Independent Leaner

indepndnt lr

I love this item the most! To make your students an independent learner or an autonomous learner is not an easy task.think Usually, teacher goes to class, teach, give task and leave. Will students learn on their own through that? Definitely no!

To make students independent and responsible with their own learning, a teacher should develop a learner strategy for example by making them write a learner diary on what they have learnt. This way, students will continuously learning on their own and reflect on what they have done to improve themselves in each subject.

il 2

Usually, this is not including in one lesson plan. It should be done as a whole. Teacher should asks the students to do it from the beginning of the year until the end to develop the students learner strategy.

# A = Active Learning and Assessment

Last but not least, is the active learning and assessment.

Active learning is just like independent learning. Making students active and involve in each of the activity done is the main aim. However, active learning and assessment is how students can evaluate and assess themselves on their learning.

fb2

Of course, teacher should provide immediate feedback to the students at least by a simple praise like “Good Job” or “Well done!” but it is not enough. Learning to assess their own learning is important. So, for assignment 3, we try to make it as meaningful and as interesting as possible so that students will be able to make self assessment on their own learning. The students should be able to think and reflect on their learning and make improvement.

brain

All in all, I think all the 7 possible above are very important to ensure students centred learning, personalized and higher order thinking lesson. It is just the matter of effort to try and finish it with success. So, remember INERTIA, remember the 7 items.

So, I think that is all and I wish you all GOOD LUCK in finishing assignments and also good luck in completing the remaining < 3weeks time of our study before we become a real teacher in just a few month time (hopefully). gambate!

Gambate! Gambate ne! Eaa!!

Chaiiyookkk!! and Adios! 🙂

e-book 1

Salam and hi to all!

we meet again here via Vis-a-Vis…

How are you all doing?

It is already the 10th week entry… Which means we only have another 4 weeks more to finish.

Time moves fast right? In 4 weeks time we will finish our 6 years study together. All the memories will never fade. Hopefully…

Well… enough for the babbling… Let’s move on to business! Hehe…

This time… I would like to talk about e-book or electronic book.

Have you heard about e-book before?

According to wikipedia, e-book is:

An electronic book (also e-book, ebook, digital book) is a text and image-based publication in digital form produced on, published by, and readable on computers or other digital devices.

e-book 2

Well look at the picture above, imagine a few years in the future. Everybody is only holding one i-pad or i-tablet or simply i-phone to store e-book, information, games and everything.

No more heavy textbook for students, no more story book, no more encyclopedia…

Everything, every information only take a few seconds to get.

World is evolving with technology.

Hmm… okay then let’s move to one of the e-book that I created before for assignment purposes.

Want to see how it’s look like BEFORE?

Well, I think at that time I don’t really know how and what is the purpose of an e-book. So, everything is just a simple-do –thing. Hehe..so I think it look messy and not really suitable to be used in the classroom.

Well here it is BEFORE any change has been made.

before all

It has 31 slides altogether. too much right?

Well, it is too much! I include too much colours, too much information,

too much things in all the slides.

Hehe..we’ll then I redo/ redesign all the slides and make it much more simpler. This time, I’m sure it would not look too bad to be used in a lesson and suits the students well.

Here is the AFTER a few edition and redesigning has been made.

after all

Look SIMPLER?

I edited it and now only 19 slides left. I cut out many parts of the story since I don’t think it is necessary.

Well here is the process of edition and what I have edited from my e-book.

1.

s1

This is the first slide of my e-book. This is what I’ve done before. Well, it is too colourful. Too much colours and look crowded.

So, I take out the background picture and leave it white in colour and here is the edited version. What do you think of it? Look simpler or not? Does it suit to be used in the classroom?

Besides, I include the picture of the two characters in the title as I think this will be more appealing and the students can relate the characters with the colours and the flow of the story later on.

Other thing that I included in the edited version is

© 2011 The design of this presentation was created explicitly for academic purposes only.

Why? Because, if some people saw and read my e-book I would not be sued for taking their stories, design or pictures which I simply download from the internet for most of it.

So, teachers out there, if you want to design something for academic purposes do not forget to include this.

s2

2.

s3

This is the second slide. Well, it looks okay to me. But still I think I need to change some parts of it. So, I change the font  from Arial to Comic Sans since it is more suitable for kids eye and it does not look too formal.

I also change the line spacing from 1.0 to 1.5 to make it bigger and better. Also, i change the font into black in colour and make the background picture transparent so that it does not disturb the students attention to the story told. Below is the edited version.

s4

3.

s5

As for this slide, I take out the background picture and leave it white in colour. I enlarged the picture, the font size.

Also, I change the font into Comic Sans make everything bigger and clearer to see.

What do you think of it? Do you prefer the first one or the edited one below?

s6

4.

s7

For this slide for Orange Fish, the changes are mostly the same as the above slide. But this time, the white background play an important role as the box around orange fish disappear. I’ve tried to edit it before but I’m not good at using Adobe Photoshop so it’s not working.

SO, other solution is make the background WHITE like you see it below.
I also change the character picture and make it BIGGER and clearer.

Don’t you think so?

s8

5.

s9

For this slide, the background picture make it too crowded as both the characters are in.

So, I take out the background picture and other changes are mostly the same as the above slides. The font size, font colour and other thing.

Also, I make all the font black in colour except for the colour part. And I also take out the blur colour of the speech bubbles as it is disturbing too. Here is the edited version.

s10

6.

s14

For the last slide. I change it totally. I took back the first slide. Duplicate it. Then, I add the word “THE END”.

As Ms. Ng said before, this is important because we want to make the e-book look much more like a real book. So, everything in an e-book should actually portray the real story book outside.

s15

Okay? Hmmm.. my edition might not be perfect. And may also still not a very good one.

If any of you have a better suggestion. Please feel free to comment and critics ya! I can improve on that later on…

Hmm.. well, this entry still do not end yet.

I still have to think how to make the e-book interactive for a classroom purposes.

1. Well, some parts that would be interactive is when it comes to the colour parts.

Actually I’ve done one lesson mostly like this. And when it comes to the part of colours, students need to show the colour cards given to them to indicate that they are aware with the story and aware with the colours used in the story. For example this slide,

s10

Students will need to show the colour card orange and green when teacher or selected students read the dialogue.

This will make students aware and stay with the story for the rest of the storyline.

2. Other parts of the e-book that teacher can make it interactive is when the green frog and the orange fish meet a few friends.

s16

Teacher can pause the e-book after the slide and ask the students a few questions like

a. Who did the green frog and the orange fish meet?

b. What did Green Frog ask Mr. Tortoise?

Teacher may also pause before the slides that Orange Fish and Green Frog meet their friends and ask students to guess like

a. Who do you think that Green Frog and Orange Fish will meet next?

b. What do you think they would ask their friend?

3. The third part of the 19 slides e-book that the teacher can modify and make it interactive is the slide below.

s17

Teacher can pause at the slide and ask students to show colour cards of the suit that the frog is wearing.

Teacher can also asks the students a few questions after or before the slides like

a. What is the colour of the suit that the frog is wearing?

b. What is the next colour that you think the frog will wear?

4. Last part of the slide can be interactive too.

Teacher can ask about the moral of the story.

s13

Teacher may also asks a few questions like

a. What colour do you think suit the frog and why?/

b. What can you learn from this story?

c. Do you think it is good to be yourself?

Hmm…. I think it is interactive enough…

A lot more activities can be done to make an e-book interactive. Do add on and feel free to comment of you have a few more ideas on how to improve.

Thank you for reading! That is all for now…See you!

Get WILD! ~ Get WEIRD! ~ Get PERSONAL!

Posted in Uncategorized on March 7, 2011 by najwaelia

What WILD about

YOU?

Have you been thinking to be WILD?

Are you WILD enough? How WILD you can be?

Do you know that there is one ICT tool that can help you

to be WILD?

Here, I present you……

b1

BuilD Your WILD Self!!!

From the name of the tool itself you know that the tool can help

you to build your wild self. But how WILD?

Let’s see…

Is this WILD?

b16

NOPE??? How about this?

b2

Not REALLY??? And… how about this one…

b10

WILD enough? Not yet? Well, CREATE your own WILDSELF then..

Feel free to visit the website by clicking here!

What do you think? Interesting?

Back to business then… This week, we learned about Personalized Learning. and our task this week is to:

Creating Personalized Learning Lesson by using the tool above.

Well, first and foremost!

What is Personalized Learning?

=> “beyond any semblance of doubt that not all students are able to learn successfully at the same pace, with the same approach, in the same environment, on the same path, and in the same style and manner.”

Retrieved from, http://www.theaplus.org/personalized_learning.html

From the excerpt above, what  understand about Personalized Learning is trying to create an environment of learning to suit each and every students individual needs and multiple intelligence.

I’m sure most of the teachers would deny in applying personalized learning in our Malaysian classroom. Most of them would say that it is not suitable as we cannot cater the needs of each and every students in the class with almost 40 pupils.

But for me, it doesn’t mean that applying personalized learning should be applied overall. It can be done step by step, part by part depending on the capability of the teacher to handle it. And one way of doing this is by maximizing the use of ICT tools in the classroom.

Well below is the  lesson plan on how I use the tool by New York Zoos and Aquarium which called “Build Your Wild Self” to maximize the use of media or ICT tools and at the same time maximizing personalized learning environment. n zoo n aqua

LESSON PLANNING

Subject : English Language

Class : Year 3 (Mix ability)

Enrolment : 38 students

Topic : Flora and Fauna – Weird Wild animals

Focused skill : Speaking and writing

Previous knowledge : Students are familiar with noun of animals and their body parts.

Learning outcomes :

2.2 Ask questions politely to obtain information and clarification.

4.4 Construct simple and compound sentences with guidance and independently.

Specification :

2.2.1 Ask simple ‘Wh’ questions.

4.4.2 Form simple sentences by matching sentence parts.

Behavioural Objectives : Students will be able to:

i) Use the sentence structure introduce to ask and answer question orally.

ii)write 3 out of 5 simple sentences with guidance

Teaching Aids : internet base website (ICT tools – Build Your Wild Self), task sheet.

1. SET INDUCTION

Well, let us start then.

Set induction usually done to activate students’ related schemata.

Usually, for traditional classroom teaching, teacher will just ask what they have done in the last class. Or some of them just went straight away to pre-teaching stage.

Set induction is a vital in Personalized Learning. And using technology is one of the way like what was discussed before on item number 6 on how to emerge Personalized Learning using technology.

6. Pretest students’ knowledge before each unit

  • Teachers assess prior knowledge and tailor lessons to each child’s needs.

For this lesson, I would love to trigger my students interest by using a video taken from YouTube on Wild Animals as below.

  • Teacher then asks the students on the name of the animals and their body parts.
  • Teacher asks the pupils whether they know that they can be WILDER than the WILD animal can be.

2. PRE-TEACHING STAGE

Moving on to pre-teaching stage.

Here teacher starts teaching on Weird Wild Animals!

  • Teacher flashes 5 pictures of weird animals.
  • Teacher asks the pupils on what combination of the weird animals form.
  • Teacher asks the pupils to give a name to each picture.

weirdo 4

Hippo Face + Crab Body

Name: HippoCrab 🙂

weirdo 5

Elephant Face + Orang Utan Body

Name: Eleptan 🙂

weirdo3

Kangaroo Face + Squirrel Body

Name : Kangarel 🙂

dog rooster

Rooster Face + Dog Body

Name: RoosDog 🙂

bird dog

Dog Face + Bird Body

Name: DogBird 🙂

* WILD Enough?

  • Teacher asks the pupils whether the weird animals wild enough?
  • Teacher asks the pupils what would happen if we make it on human body.
  • Teacher shows the picture below and asks on the students feedback.

weirdo 6

HUMAN + SPHINX???? = SPHiMAN????

Haha… ok2…what do you think about this?

  • Teacher then tell the students that they are going to make it on their own body using the computer.

3. PRESENTATION STAGE

For the presentation stage, teacher teaches on how to use the tools and get into fun personalized activities with the students.

  • Teacher asks the pupils to open the website.

http://www.buildyourwildself.com/

p/s: Well, we need to make sure that each students got their own computer for this activities to get PERSONALIZED!

  • Teacher then shows one more video on how should they go on playing with the tools.
  • Teacher pauses in certain parts in the video and give further explanation on how to use the tools.
  • Teacher asks each students to write their name in the website and get started.
  • Teacher asks the pupils to give the weird name to their WEIRD WILD created SELF!
  • Teacher shows the example made.

wildself

NAJ –> The Pol-Fly- Peacock!

  • Teacher asks a few of the students to present their WILD SELF!
  • Teacher asks the pupils to email their work to their friends and got they will get a letter like the above.

4. PRODUCTION STAGE

For the Production Stage… I’m thinking of making Scrapbook

or MINIBook…

scrapbook 1

  • Teacher asks the students to draw or print out their weird wild self!.
  • Teacher asks the pupils to paste it their scrapbook of animals.
  • Teacher asks the pupils to include the name of their weird wild self and the description of each body parts as given in the website.
  • Teacher tells the pupils that they might include the letter given to them via email and they can describe about their friends wild self.
  • Teacher gives rewards (cute stickers) to pupils with neat and interesting work.

stickers

5. CLOSURE

As for the closure, teacher can make it as a week project work.

  • Teacher asks the pupils to go back and find out or create more wild animals and describe about it.
  • Teacher can also make PlayDoh project work with the students by creating playdoh weird animal.

pladoh 2  playdoh

Well, I think that is enough for the lesson. I always get carried away..

Hope you all don’t get bored reading my entries…. Hehe..

A few items that  included on personalized learning here are :

1.Deliver instruction through multiple forms of media

  • Teachers access instructional videos, audio clips, animations, instructional games and other available online resources.

#Here, I definitely used different form of media which are videos, pictures, audio clips for instructions, and also game like tool.

3.Give students options

  • Using digital media students are allowed to show learning through a variety of media tools.

#Here, I leave students to get PERSONAL by making them do the weird self and scrapbook on their own to see how far the students grasp the knowledge of the day using the technological tool.

4.Practice independent work skills

  • Teachers have procedures so students know how to use the technology and what to do if they have a question.

# Here. my pupils are given the chance to experience the tool on their own.

7.Be flexible when plans go awry

  • Teachers model good problem-solving behaviours and involve students in devising alternative approaches when technology isn’t available or not working.

# teacher can always change the activities above by printing out pictures or draw it on your own if the technology is not available at the school.

Okay then, I think that is all about Personalized Learning and the Lesson….

Hope it fulfil the requirement. I wrote based on what I think it would be fun and personal enough to cater most of my students need. It might not be perfect and may not cater with all the students learning style but there are many more things that can be done to improve the lesson…

Till then. thank you for reading!

Get WILD! Get WEIRD! Get PERSONAL!

See you! 🙂

Tuesday: 22nd of February 2011: 2.00 p.m.

Title of the story : The Brave Monkey Pirate

Title of game: Who Wants to be a Pirate-aire

Well, hello and hi again to all,

The day, date and time above mark the time of our presentation last week on “Who Wants to be a Pirate-aire” adapted from “ Who Wants to be a Millionaire” game show.

As the title of this entry illustrate,

the things that I want to bring forward today is how much I’ve learn through the process of designing the game until the day we presented and the given feedback from our friends.

And to show how much I’ve learn is surely through QUESTIONS.

Today I learn.

Today I question.

From the beginning of the task, I started asking questions.

Well, when I read the email, the first question came out.

What is the purpose of the task? Why should we do this?

#Well, I surely get the answer after everything finish. There are a lot of purpose of this task and some that I can think of are:

1. To prepare ourselves for Assignment 3.

2. To help us to think creatively and critically on how should we design the game to suit the students.

3. To help us learn by doing. Without trying it out, we will never know how to do it on our own.

Hmm..okay next move on to the process of doing the task. So other question came out.

How the task should be done?

To be honest, I don’t really know what should be done at first. But then, it is a task, so it must be done by hook or by crook so I took the chance to ask a few of my friends and ask what should be done.

Then, through the process, I asked a few more Questions.

How can we make it interesting enough? How can I get the idea to create a good game based on the given game?

#So, I need to seek out for the answer surely. So, I surfed the net and try to find some of the activities or interesting lesson that I can incorporate with the game. Then, I came through a story!

m4

Well, it is the story that you all saw before the presentation of the game entitled “The Brave Monkey Pirate”. Well, I fall in love with the story the moment I saw it. The characters in the story were so cute and the drawing will attract the students. So, I got into a few more questions.

Example of the extract from the story:

3

12

How can I integrate the story into the game?

#This time, I was quite blank on how should I move on, so the next day, we meet up in the group. Discussing and dividing works. Well, a few more heads surely give a lot more ideas.

So, in the groups we worked out on more and more questions. As I said before, questions help us learn more.

Well, a few of the questions are…….:

a) What level of the students that we can use the story and emerge it into the game?

b) How can we make it interesting enough?

c) What kind of background and font colour that should be used?

d) How can we presented it? should we divide it into 2 separate PowerPoint slide?

# And then, through the questions we discussed and planned. It works out well enough for us. We were scrutinizing the pros and cons of each ideas and from that I think that we learn from each other. We learn to cooperate, to accept ideas and to make decision. Decision making here is important as without decision nothing could be done. And the work could not be carried out well. Also, we tried accepting each others’ ideas and try to merge everything in the activity.

While working on the task, my partner and I are assigned  in designing and manipulating the template given into the agreed theme of our presentation later on which is the “Pirate” theme.

m2

So, a few more questions came out.

Where can we find the pictures? What type of pictures is suitable for the students? What type of font should be used and how about the colour?

# Hmmm.. there are a lot more questions actually because designing the PowerPoint from the template is not an easy task. We need to think of the hyperlink and few more problems coming out. We tried to make it as friendly as possible so that it can be used straight away. Well, we did try our best but still we know that nothing can be perfect. Other people may perceive what we have done as something else. And there are still lot more to be improve.

And as I said before, we don’t mind at all as we know that it is a process of leaning.

m1

m3

Then, it came to the day of the presentation. A few questions in my mind are:

Will we present it well? Will my friends understand what we are trying to deliver? What should we improve later on?

# While the presentation going on, what I notice is the flow of the presentation and also the condition of the class. It is not easy to present in a big class with almost 70 people in it and to deliver it well is quite a problem but still I think we tried our best. Along the presentation we tried to deliver what we have discussed before and waits for the feedback. Even though I’ve been presenting for almost 6 years from the foundation, I was still nervous until we get the feedback from our lecturer. And I think we did well enough!

I was quite relieved after the presentation. We were the first to present and we were the one who need to set the benchmark of the presentation and from what I think all of the groups did a very good job and that make me feel good. Besides, as we were the first group, we still don’t know what to expect and what should we do but as things go on everything flows as plan.

Then, we need to give feedback to the other 12 groups. So, of course few more questions should be fulfilled.

How can I be critical to assess the other groups?

What criteria should I follow to assess the group?

What are the strength and things that should be improve for each group?

How much should I give for each group?

# For me being critical is being judgemental in a positive way. And sometime to be critical is to critics and not all critics are bad. Critics that can help other’s development especially in learning are good.

So, in assessing and giving feedback for each group, I think it very critically and scrutinize every single small thing to give feedback so that I can help the other group to improve in designing the task. Overall, every group did a good a job in presenting and also in giving feedback. From the feedback given, I’m sure each and every group can improve from it as I said before everyone sees thing differently and from the feedback we can definitely improve in certain aspects.

And also in reading the feedback from other group. My expression through questions are:

What can I learn from these feedback?

What can I improve from what they commented?

Did we all do well?

#Hmm… it is all beyond my expectation. This task even though it is just a one day presentation task, it helps us learn a lot. Every single thing from the beginning, the learning process never stop.

The learning is still flowing even when I am writing this entry. Questions after questions are coming and that is how the idea to write come. Right?

Well, before leaving this entry, I need to ask two important questions to any of you reading this entry.

What did you learn from reading this entry? Did

it help you to think critically?

So, I think that is all for now! thank you for reading, until then see you!

Adios!! 🙂

Haha..but then when I started playing it, I can’t even blink…

Enough for the introduction. Let’s move on to the Lesson Plan.

How I’m going to use this game in a lesson. I’ve been thinking about it when I played the game lately. It is good to teach ways to plant tree, teach on vocabulary, adjectives and a lot more using this game. It is not only can be used in English lesson  but also in a science lesson, mathematics lesson, arts lesson and a lot more.

So, let’s see how this game can be turned to an interesting lesson.

Hopefully it is interesting. :p

LESSON PLAN

Anticipated Problems : Students might face problems when they are trying to form sentences to write a postcard.

SET INDUCTION

  • For set induction, teacher shows a video of Plant vs Zombies Music Video.

p/s: Really loveeee this music video, i can listen to this music over and over again…

This is to trigger the students interest and also to introduce them to the characters in the game.

  • Teacher asks the pupils what plants need to stay alive
  • Teacher asks the pupils whether they know how to grow a plant.

PRE-TEACHING STAGE

  • Teacher shows screenshots from the game of ways to grow a plant in the game.
  • Teacher teaches on the sentence structure on ways to grow a plant using the screenshots.

p7

p8

p9

p13

p14

  • Teacher then divides the class into 6 groups.
  • Teacher gives out one envelope to each group.
  • Each group need to rearrange the sentence correctly based on  screenshots showed before.
  • Teacher rewards the best group.
  • Teacher then discusses on the correct arrangement and also explain on the ways to grow a plant in the game using the screenshots and the sentence that the students arrange.

PRACTICE STAGE

  • Teacher asks each students to open the game and log in as a new user. (need enough computer for each students).

  • Teacher explains that they need to write out the sentence learned in the brochure template given to explain to their friend on how to grow a plant in the game played.
  • Teacher demonstrates on the first sentence.

PRODUCTION STAGE

There are a lot of things can be done for production stage.

cute!

Teacher may asks the students to just read out their brochure.

Teacher can also asks the students to make finger puppets, box puppet or masks, and a simple playdoh  which can be used for the next lesson.

playdoh zombie

For the next lesson teacher can make the students use their produced puppets or mask to dramatise it to the class. Or teacher can asks the students to work in group and create their own production of Plant Vs Zombies!

It would be good ask the students can enjoy and learn at the same time.

shroom 1

CLOSURE

  • For closure, teacher may asks the students to go back and play the game on their own.
  • Teacher also asks the students to bring their produced puppets or masks for the next lesson where the students are going to make their own version of Plants VS Zombies by acting it out on their own or videotaping the moving puppets and produced their own artwork in Youtube!

Hmmm…basically that is how the lesson are going to be.

But, surely it is hard to be practised in Malaysian classroom since most of the schools do not provide enough computers.

Besides, other implication is the time constraint. We won’t have enough time to conduct this kind of lesson unless we make it as a workshop!

Well, I believe that nothing is impossible if we make it possible. So,

why not! I think I’m going to try out this activities once with my future students. Hehe..who knows it will be a wonderful lesson.

As for me, I enjoyed playing this game soooooo much! And I’m sure my students will.

I think that is all for this entry from me, teacher Najwa…

hehe.. maybe you have a wonderful suggestion to add in this lesson. So, feel free to give any suggestion and comments…

Take care 🙂 Don’t let Zombies eat you BRAINS!!!

kerpoof home

Salam and Hi to all!

First of all, welcome back to KL everyone!

Back to our study and work..hehe..

Well, straight to the entry this time, I would like to talk about One of the ICT tools which is “KerPOof”.

I do not know why it is called KerPOof but for me it is like a magic spell,

like when you say ~Abra Kadabra! KerPOof!~ and then here come magical thing from the hat (in this case, the web 2.0 tool).

magic 1

I chose this tool because for me, KerPOof is MAGICAL…. You can utilize it to the maximum as you can.

I welcome you all to the MAGICAL LAND of KerPOof!

I would review KerPOof thoroughly below, so keep reading ya!

First of all, I would love to explain to you what KerPOof can do!

The functions, applications, what you as teacher can use this tool to be used in your classroom.

Want to know what is KerPOof? Let us watch the video below…

1. the functions of the tool

I present to you KerPOof!… This is how the layout of homepage look like.

What I like the most about KerPOof is the use of bright colours and also cute characters. Like what you all can see below, the characters, animals, emoticons, and objects all are coloured and shaped beautifully with bright and colourful colours.

kerpOof home

Well, about the functions, you can refer to the picture below.

KerPOof will help you to spell pictures, make movie, make greeting cards, also draw and colours, make pictures and tell stories.

What a waste to not to use KerPOof to the maximum.

This tool can be used to keep your teaching resources. You can make movies, pictures, cards or draw pictures and keep it all in the inventory. You can make as much as you can and keep it.

uses of kerpoof

Another important function of KerPOof is it focuses on the activities that can be done in the classroom.

If you click “For Educators” below, you can access many things that can be used in the classroom for example classroom ideas. KerPOof provide you plenty of ideas to use the activities and functions in KerPOof in the classroom.

for tr

Also, KerPOof provides Lesson Plans. You can just download the PDF files of the Lesson Plans and use it in your classroom.

kerpoof lp

lp kerpoof Furthermore, what is great about KerPOof is we can create TEACHER’S ACCOUNT.

You can sign in and monitor you class’ activities through KerPOof.

The functions is just like moodle where students can chat and discuss about the topic or activities done in class. Teacher can monitor the students development in learning. And the good news is you can use all the functions and applications without paying anything. It is all for FREE!…

teacher's accoount

Teacher AccountsKerpoof offers educators the ability to register students and arrange them into classes. Students may chat with each other, post creations on a class message board (moderated by you), and collaborate on a project in real-time from different computers.

2. the limitations of the tool

small

a) Small Layout

One limitation of this tool is the small layout. Like what you see in above picture, KerPOof did not occupy all the space. And worse come to worse, I only use Netbook, where the screen much much smaller and at some point you cannot even see what is written. So, I need to make it ‘full screen’ every time I want to use KerPOof.

So, for children to use it may be okay if you use it using desktop computer with large screen. Or else, you need to change to full screen mode in order to be able to read out what is written on the screen.

b) Need internet connection

Other limitation is of course the internet connection. Since, this web 2.0 tool is internet based tool, so surely without good internet connection, teacher cannot use it for classroom activities.

Other than, for me, this tool is very useful, attractive and very good to be used as part of everyday lessons.

3. when can this tool be used

When? When can this tool be used? As suggested in the classroom ideas, this tool can be used in language lesson, science and math lesson, spelling lesson, art lesson, also in biology lesson for small kids.

For example, through one of the functions “Spell a Picture”, as shown below, teachers can use this as one of the activity for spelling lesson. Teacher may ask some of the students to spell out any suitable words which match the scene and try it out using the computer.

spell a picture

Whereas, using the function of “Tell a Story”, teacher can use it as story starter. Let your students guess what will happen and let them draw and write using their own imagination. Teacher may facilitates along the way. Also teacher can use it for reading comprehension or genre writing. Also make dictation games and on and on. There are so much activities you can make using this tool.

winter world

For arts and creativity, as teacher you can use this tool to let the students make greeting cards like the example below. You may access the students’ creativity and also teach students about different greetings using “Make a Card” function/application.

birthday

4. the user friendliness from the teacher point of view (you)

userfriendly

If I was to give stars to rank KerPOof user friendliness, I will defintely give 5 full stars to KERPOOF!!! Why? Because it is truly user-friendly!

5 star

It took me not much time to explore most parts of KerPOof functions. I even tried out the activities and made some interesting stories!

And even my 8 years old sister, Nadya, try out the “Make a Card” application. And I do not even help her and she come out with a beautiful card below for me. She know where to look for tools, text, fond and on and on.

iman

And as for me, as a teacher, surely this tool is very easy to use. Very user-friendly and not difficult for a beginner.

5. the tool is suitable for which standard

This tool is suitable to be used at all level for primary school children.

For the beginner, for smaller kids, teacher may use the “ Spell a Picture” application for spelling lesson. For year 1 to year 3, teacher may also asks the students to make greeting cards like what my sister did.

For upper primary students, from year 4 to year 6, teacher may asks them to create stories or describe the characters in the story. Teacher may also show them movies and make discussion on the movies through chatting or forum.

Lots and lots more activities can be done for all level or standards of pupils. It is up to the teacher to make it useful for classroom activities.

Ohh yaa.. before I forget, KerPOof also provide you standard guideline to use correct activities for correct level of students. Easy right? hehe..

You may refer to this link. Click here.

standards

Haha… sorry to all. I cannot stop typing…

I think I should really stop now, but what I can conclude is KerPOof, despite of the limitations, is a very good tool to be used as part of every day lesson. For me, kerPOof may help us a lot to prepare teaching resources and may also help students in learning in a FUN way yet inspired and motivated to get involved in the lesson.

See, still want to type… get addicted I think.

So, what else can I say. Start using KerPOof!

See you all in next entry.

Feel free to drop by and leave comment ya!

Cheerio! Adios :p

~~T to the P to the C to the K spells out TPCK 0r TPaCK~~

Posted in Technology on January 24, 2011 by najwaelia

got tpackHello and Hi again to all viewers of Vis-a-Vis.

If you are a teacher, you may need to ask yourself, Got TPaCK?

But do you know what is TPaCK? let us go through with it together..

Keep scrolling down………………….

T-k = Technological Knowledge

P-k = Pedagogical Knowledge

C-k = Content Knowlege

T-k + P-k + C-k = TPCK / TPaCk

Looking at the equation above might give you headache

if you do not know what are the use of the thing or method called

TPCK or TPaCK.

First of all, let us see the diagram below and maybe you can conclude what can you understand from the diagram before I begin my explanation on the topic.

tpck

Basically, TPaCK or “technological pedagogical content knowledge” is the specialized, highly applied knowledge that supports content-based technological integration. This is what Harris and Hofer (2009) explained about TPaCK. In simple words, those are some kind of knowledge which should be integrated in every lesson. It is how teachers or educators use their knowledge in term of using technology to deliver the content using the right pedagogical knowledge.

knowledge

According to Shulman, the past policymakers and educators believed that “teaching requires basic skills, content knowledge and general pedagogical knowledge”. This shows that in the past technology is not part of the teaching process. But then, when TPaCK is widely used and applied by educators, technology become a part of teaching.

Again from what was explained by Harris and Hofer, each and every part of TPaCK plays a very important role.

First and foremost is the T!

T for Technology. The technological knowledge that an educator have is for him to select and utilize the correct technology tools in the classroom in order to the deliver the content of the lesson. For example, setting up the LCD projector, use PowerPoint or videos to stimulate students thinking on the topic taught.

P for Pedagogy. Pedagogical knowledge is the method, ways, or techniques used to teach the content for example scaffolding, constructivism, cooperative learning and more and more.

C for Content. Content is surely the gist that an educator or teacher want to teach in the classroom which also means the knowledge that a teacher want his students to grasp at the end of the lesson.

K for Knowledge. Knowledge of each of the above is highly needed to apply TPaCK in the classroom.

But then, if we depend on these T, P, and C separately, we might not be able to carry the lesson out effectively. T needs P and also needs C. They need each other.

I will explained it thoroughly based on one of the lesson done in the classroom during my teaching practice. It might not be a perfectly applied TPaCK but at least I think that I have done my best to try to integrate each elements in TPaCK in the lesson.

Subject : English Language

Class : Year 3 Melati (38 students – Mix ability)

Context/ Theme : World of Knowledge

Topic : Flora and Fauna – Animals’ sound

Focused skill : Reading

Integrated skill : Listening and writing

Previous knowledge : Students are familiar with noun of animals – alligator, elephant, giraffe

As you all can see from the above layout of the lesson, it is quite difficult to utilize technology in a class packed with students. Thus, I’ve tried my very best to try to utilise technology but at the same time I make sure that the content was delivered successfully by using the right method to teach.

Ok, let us talk about the Technology part first.

technlogy

The technology tools that I used in this lesson are my laptop, also my speaker and my printers. This time I did not use the computer lab since it was not available. So, I decided to bring my own laptop and speaker to school.

I began the lesson by playing sound of animals in a jungle. I let the students close their eyes and make them listen to the sound for a few times and ask them on the name of the animals that they heard from the sound. Surely, I need to prepare early and luckily the class was after recess.

The one above is just an example since I don’t let the students see the videos but I only let them listen to the sound.

So, basically the technological knowledge needed here is on how to arrange all the sounds that I want the students to listen to and put it into orders in Windows Media Player. Also, I also need to know how to setup the speakers and make sure it works before the class start.

Also, I used flash cards of pictures and sentences which I downloaded the pictures from the internet and type the sentences using Microsoft Words and then what I need is a printer to print all those things and present it in the class later on.

pic 2

pic 1

flash card

I also made my own crossword puzzle using Microsoft Words and then print and make photocopies for all my students. And you can also make your own crossword puzzle you know! It is much faster and easier for you. refer to this link Create Your Own Crossword Puzzle .

crossword puzzle

Also, I made headbands for my students by just printing the pictures and also chant cards all by using Microsoft Words.

headband

chant card

See! How much technology help me to prepare almost 80% of the materials used in this lesson. Certainly, I cannot deny the importance of ICT in teaching nowadays.

Now, let me explain about the Pedagogy used in this lesson.

I basically used 3 methods or principles in teaching in this lesson. It might not be used explicitly but still I tried to maximize the learning through the teaching methods.

The Direct Method – I used pictures and flash cards of sentences to present the content of the lesson. All these materials was used in order to help the students understand the meaning of the lesson taught. Also, I used English in the classroom and only use the native language when it is highly needed. From the beginning of the lesson, I trigger the students interest in order to make them communicate and participate in the lesson using the target language. Grammar was taught inductively. The students learn to fill in the blanks based on the chant and the pre-teaching taught in the lesson.

The Audio-Lingual Method – Also, I used the pictures and headband given to the students to give meaning. The students also repeat lines of the chant repetitively and the drillings was there. Students remember the sentence mostly by memorising through the drilling of the chanting part. Also, new vocabulary was introduced from the chant read by the students.

Desuggestopedia -  Before the class start, I pasted some pictures of the animals around the classroom and make them search for it later on. Also, the use of flashcards of pictures and sentences using different colour paper also part of the lesson to make the students interested in learning. The students also chants together in their groups where they help each other in pronouncing each words. This also includes in Cooperative Learning method.

All in all, there is no exact method used in the lesson. I just integrate whichever method I feel that it is good to make the students learn the content and not only attracted to the materials used.

So, the last one is of course the Content – knowledge.

The content in this lesson is the behavioural objective. What I want the students to achieve by the end of the lesson. The BO are:

i) read the 2 lines of a chant in the chant card fluently with correct intonation, and able to read all the lines with expression.

ii) listen to the chant and make 4 out of 6 animals’ sound learned in the lesson

iii) write 4 out of 6 animals sounds correctly by completing a crossword puzzle.

So, basically I want my students to learn the animals sound by heart by the end of the lesson and I think almost 70% of the class get it.

Hmmm… That is not all about this entry… I still need to answer 2 important question on TPaCk.. Sooooooo…keep scrolling down ya!

How the Content- knowledge is being taught via Pedagogical-knowledge that I have?

To make sure that the content that I need to deliver to my students are delivered successfully, I need to use the correct Pedagogical knowledge. Okay let’s see, the first method used is The Direct Method. This method emphasize more on the used of colourful pictures and also realia to give meaning. I used flashcards to make the students relate the animals with their sound

i.e. Fawn – bleat

      Tiger – roar

      Elephant – trumpet

      Monkey – gibber

About the Audio-Lingual method used, I relate it to the content as this method stress on drilling. Chain drilling and memorisation is the key for this concept. So, used this method to deliver the content by making the students read the chant and sentences taught repetitively to make them memorize and used it correctly later on in the task given.

i.e.

I am a tiger…

Roarrr…Roarr..Roarrr…..

I roar…..

Roarrr…Roarr…Roarrrr…

As for desuggestopedia, I used this method to make the students interested to learn. I pasted the pictures and sentence around the class and on the board to make sure that the students are aware with the content taught in the lesson. Also the students help each other in cooperative learning in making sure that each students get the content.

How Technological-knowledge helps the Pedagogical-knowledge to make sure that the students get the Content?

As mentioned above, without technological knowledge, I really need to work harder to make sure that the lesson will come to this level. Technological knowledge in utilizing all the technological tools are very important to me as they make my life easier and I do things faster. It help me to implement the method of Direct method where I need pictures to deliver the meaning of the content that I want to deliver in the lesson. Also, I used Microsoft words to help me prepare the chant cards to make sure that each students can drills and memorise well the content of the lesson which is the animals sound. Also, the pictures are also prepared using technology to prepare the classroom using Desuggestopedia principles.

In a nutshell,  think all these are really important for us as an educator. Everything has to work hand-in-hand to make sure that what we wish to accomplish at the end of the lesson are achievable. And, without doubt TPaCK is truly essential in teaching and learning. All the elements should be together to make sure that we deliver the content successfully at the end of it.

joinI think that’s all for now. See you all later on.

Thank you for reading and feel free to drop comments and suggestion 🙂
